Reduced-Risk Chemicals

The Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) of 1996 dictated a safer chemistry approach to pest control. Both IR-4 and EPA are working toward registration of crop protection chemicals identified as reduced-risk by these criteria:

  • Low impact on human health
  • Low toxicity to birds, fish, other wildlife, and beneficial organisms
  • Low potential for groundwater contamination
  • Lower use rates
  • Low potential for pest resistance
  • Compatibility with integrated pest management (IPM)
